Part II: Causes of serious workplace injuries in leading industries

Regular readers of our Jonesboro workers’ compensation law blog will undoubtedly recall our recent post detailing the leading causes of serious workplace injuries in eight industries. The data about the serious injuries (those requiring employees to miss at least five days of work) is from the recent release of Liberty Mutual’s annual Workplace Safety Index.

We went over the leading causes of serious workplace injuries in three industries in our previous post: manufacturing, healthcare and construction. This time we’re going to look at professional services, retail, wholesale and more.

What are professional services? The answer is probably obvious: attorneys (including those who help clients appeal workers’ comp denials, of course), architects, doctors, engineers, IT, accountants and related businesses.

  • Professional services: The top cause of serious on-the-job injuries is falls on the same level. Numbers two and three: overexertion involving outside sources and falls to a lower level. Numbers four and five are roadway incidents involving motorized vehicles and being struck by an object or equipment.
  • Retail: Overexertion is at the top of the list here, followed by falls on the same level and being struck by an object or equipment.
  • Wholesale: As in retail, overexertion is the leading cause of serious workplace injuries, but is instead followed by the struck-by category and then falls to a lower level.
  • Transportation/warehousing: Overexertion is again at the top of the list. It’s followed by falls on the same level, and unsurprisingly, roadway incidents.
  • Leisure/hospitality: the top two causes listed in the Index are falls on the same level and overexertion.

If you have suffered an on-the-job injury and been turned down for Georgia workers’ comp benefits, you can appeal with the help of an attorney.
