When work safety professionals discuss the types of injuries and events that result in injuries, they are often focused on the industries in which the injuries are most likely to occur. Sometimes they dive deeper into the numbers and examine the frequency with which certain types of injuries occur to men and women.
The National Safety Council recently a report that states that women suffer 70 percent of all nonfatal injuries caused by assaults. The study is of assault-related injuries requiring days away from work.
The NSC says assaults are now the fourth leading cause of deaths in the workplace. The number of women who sustained injuries in assaults (12,820 in 2017) has risen 60 percent since 2011. The number of men injured in work-related assaults: 5,530.
The NSC says assaults include several types of violent incidents:
- Intentional shooting by another person
- Stabbing, slashing, cutting and piercing
- Hitting, beating, shoving and kicking
- Rape and sexual assault
- Strangulation
- Bombing, arson
- Threats and verbal assault
Women are also disproportionately impacted by several other types of work-related injuries and illnesses, including:
- Accidental injury by another person (59 percent)
- Falls on the same level (57 percent)
- Ergonomic issues (61 percent)
Women in healthcare suffer 80 percent of all nonfatal illnesses and injuries, as well as 61 percent in education and 60 percent in management-business-financial firms, the nonprofit NSC said in its report.
